When Doug and his wife moved into their Canton, Georgia home, their backyard patio was one of their favorite spaces — a quiet spot shaded by trees and shared with their little dog. But after more than 20 years of use, the paver patio began showing its age. Uneven stones created trip hazards, some of the border pavers had come loose, and years of Georgia rain had dulled the color that once made the space so inviting.
That’s when Doug decided it was time to bring the patio back to life.
Meeting Doug – and His Dog
When Chase, one of our Perfect Paver Co. sales reps, arrived for the consultation, he was greeted not just by Doug, but by his energetic pup and a warm Southern accent that reminded Chase of his own family roots.
As they walked the patio, they talked about the home’s history and Doug’s plans to eventually sell the property. “He wasn’t looking for something flashy,” Chase said. “He just wanted his patio to look level again and to make sure the repairs would hold up long term.”
Doug had already met with a few contractors, but after seeing Perfect Paver Co.’s reviews and hearing about our warranty, he felt confident he’d found the right team. “He liked that we weren’t just going to patch it,” Chase added. “He wanted it done right — and that’s what we do.”
The Challenges of a 20-Year-Old Patio
The patio was originally installed decades ago, and part of it had been built over an existing concrete pad. Over time, the edge of the patio — the section extending past the concrete — had begun to settle.
As Rodrick, our foreman on the project, described it:
“When I pulled the pavers up, I could see where all the material underneath had washed away. Some of the pavers had actually broken because the drop was so big.”
To make matters worse, the installer years ago had used a fine sand base instead of a proper compacted stone base. That meant water could easily wash the support out from under the pavers.
Our Repair and Sealing Process
The first day, Rodrick and his crew steam cleaned the entire patio using 200°F water. This process removed years of dirt, mold, and debris — and also cleared the joints of old, unstable sand so the repairs could begin fresh.
Once the area was dry, Rodrick carefully lifted the uneven pavers, packed the base material tightly with our high-quality paver base aggregate, and reinstalled the stones to eliminate trip hazards. The team replaced several broken pieces and ensured the entire patio was leveled and stable.
To finish the project, polymeric sand was installed between the pavers. This special sand hardens once activated with water, locking the joints and helping minimize weed growth — something Doug had been struggling with for years. Finally, the surface was sealed to protect against Georgia’s unpredictable weather and make the color pop once again.
“It looked gray and dull when we got there,” Rodrick said. “When we finished, all the rich browns and tans came back. It looked brand new again.”
A Backyard Worth Enjoying Again
When Doug saw the finished patio, he couldn’t believe how much better it looked. “He said it looked brand new,” Rodrick recalled. “He was really happy — especially with how the colors came back.”
Chase later followed up and said Doug left a glowing review about his experience:
It’s projects like this one that remind us why we love what we do — restoring the spaces our clients love most, so they can spend more time enjoying them.
