When Laura K. contacted Perfect Paver Co. about her home in Pataskala, Ohio, she had a clear goal: restore her patio and walkways so they looked fresh and performed as they should. Years of wear, failing plastic edging, and messy black sand from a previous contractor had left the space uneven and unattractive. And with a graduation party coming up, she wanted everything to look its best.

Laura already knew she could trust us — her daughter had worked with Perfect Paver Co. before and shared her positive experience.

A Sales Visit That Set the Stage

During her consultation, our sales consultant Scott listened to Laura’s concerns. The black plastic edging along her walkway had become a constant frustration, creating tripping hazards and allowing the pavers to push outward.

Scott explained why this happens: plastic edging is spiked into the ground, but in Ohio’s freeze–thaw cycles, the ground shifts, spikes loosen, and the edging heaves up. His solution was to replace it with Perma Edge Paver Restraint, a concrete-based edging product reinforced with fiberglass fibers. Unlike plastic, Perma Edge won’t heave or shift, and once it’s covered with grass or mulch, it’s practically invisible.

Scott also learned Laura was originally from North Carolina — the same area where Joey, one of our repair foremen, grew up. To help build comfort and trust, Scott made sure Joey was assigned to her project.

Repairing the Walkway and Patio

When Joey arrived, his focus was on correcting years of issues the right way. He began by tearing out the failing plastic edging and installing Perma Edge along both sides of the front walkway. He also repaired settled areas on the patio — some caused by past contractors who had improperly reinstalled pavers, and others from rodent tunnels beneath the surface.

Each repair was done with proper base preparation and compaction to ensure the pavers would remain stable long term. Joey also re-glued and leveled several loose bullnose step caps, securing them properly to prevent future shifting.

Cleaning, Sanding, and Sealing

After Joey’s repairs were complete, Gary and Ethan stepped in for the restoration phase. They began with a deep steam cleaning to remove years of dirt, organic growth, and the stubborn black nitro sand left from the prior install.

Laura’s biggest concern was the messy joints and black speckling across her pavers. Gary and Ethan carefully removed the old sand and replaced it with our premium polymeric sand in a natural tone. The joints were filled to the proper depth — flush with the chamfer, not overfilled — giving the patio a clean, uniform appearance and long-lasting strength.

The final step was applying our water-based penetrating sealer. Unlike topical sealers, which can leave a slippery surface, this product soaks into the paver, enhances the natural color, and provides lasting protection without changing the texture.

A Complete Transformation

By the time the project was finished, Laura was thrilled. The edges were strong, the steps secure, the sand joints neat and consistent, and the true color of her pavers restored. She told us she had forgotten how nice her patio looked until the cleaning and sealing revealed its original tones.

In her own words:

“Our repair expert, Joey, was meticulous. Gary and Ethan were our cleaning and sealing team. They did a wonderful job. The entire patio looks brand new. Everyone showed up on time. They were friendly and professional. Is it expensive? Yes. But well worth it for a job well done.” – Laura K., Pataskala, OH
